At Intertech Contracts, we take great pride in nurturing talent and providing opportunities for people to build fulfilling careers. Two shining examples of this are Apprentice Painter Holly Jordan and Finance Assistant Megan Dove, who have both overcome challenges and worked hard to achieve incredible success in their roles. Their journeys highlight the importance of apprenticeships and the power of support, determination and resilience.

Holly’s Inspiring Journey

Holly Jordan’s path into painting and decorating has been anything but conventional. She faced significant personal challenges from a young age, experiencing homelessness and instability. At 17, she applied for an apprenticeship through Kenworthy House, determined to create a better future for herself.

“Since I was 13, I had been sofa surfing at friends’ houses. Then, when I met my other half, I moved into their home. By the time I was 18, I was enrolled at Hull Training and Adult Education (HTAE), starting my career,” Holly shares.

Despite the difficulties she encountered, Holly remained focused on her goals. With support from tutors Matt, Claire and Carole from HTAE, she found the motivation and encouragement she needed to keep going. Their belief in her potential helped her stay on track and push forward.

“When I first applied to HTAE, I was in a tough place - homeless and struggling. But I knew I wanted to achieve something in my life. Within a year, I was working with a company that was actively looking for female decorators.”

Holly’s determination and skill have been recognised in the industry. In 2023, she was named HTAE Apprentice of the Year and received Special Recognition in the Intermediate Apprentice of the Year category at the EY Apprenticeship Awards 2024.

Her journey has not only given her career stability but also a sense of purpose.

“My employer has given me the reassurance and support I needed. They’ve made me feel like a valued part of the team,” she says.

Intertech Contracts’ Commercial Finance Manager, Wayne Tompkins, praises Holly’s work ethic:

“Holly has become a welcomed addition to our team. She takes pride in her work and is always ready to help others. We’re excited to see where her career takes her!”

With her Level 2 Painting & Decorating qualification complete, along with her Level 2 English qualification, Holly is eager to keep growing and learning in her career.

“My journey has been challenging, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. It’s proof that no matter where you come from, with the right support and determination, you can accomplish anything.”

Megan’s Career Progression

Megan Dove joined Intertech Contracts in 2016 as a Business Administration apprentice, having little knowledge of what to expect from the industry. However, she quickly adapted and developed the skills needed to succeed.

“My mind was a blank canvas, but shortly after, I began picking up all the knowledge I needed to be successful in my role,” Megan recalls.

Her first apprenticeship, a Level 2 Business Administration qualification, lasted 12 months and involved four days of work and one day at college each week. After successfully completing it, Intertech Contracts offered her a permanent position as an Office Administrator.

Determined to keep progressing, Megan then embarked on a Level 3 Business Administration apprenticeship, which lasted 18 months. Her hard work paid off, and she secured a stable role within the company. Now, after seven years of skill development and experience, she is beginning a Level 3 Team Leader/Supervisor apprenticeship.

“This new qualification will help me develop a greater understanding of the management role within a business and the impact my decisions and actions can have on others.”

Megan’s passion for her work and the supportive environment at Intertech Contracts have been key factors in her career progression.

“I have been with the team for nine years now, and I’ve built amazing relationships with my colleagues. Coming to work gives me the motivation to keep progressing. I always have a spring in my step because I genuinely enjoy being here,” she says.

She also highlights the strong bond between office staff and tradesmen, which helps the business run smoothly and fosters a positive working environment.

The Value of Apprenticeships

Holly and Megan’s stories demonstrate how apprenticeships can open doors to rewarding careers, providing valuable skills and opportunities for growth. At Intertech Contracts, we believe in investing in people, supporting their development, and giving them the foundation to succeed.

Both Holly and Megan have shown incredible determination and resilience, proving that with the right guidance and a strong work ethic, anything is possible. Their journeys inspire us all, and we’re excited to see what they accomplish next.
